Black Student Union Creates Vibrant #BLM Mural On Campus
Members of the Black Student Union at ӣƵ of California turned their vision into reality on Saturday, painting a vibrant and strong #BLM mural on Acacia Avenue, the main street running through campus. The #BLM mural shows BSU’s support for the black community on and off campus as well as for recent events in regards to the #BlackLivesMatter movement.
The BSU thanks all members of the Dominican community who showed support during this hugely successful project, with a big shout out to Lynn Sondag, associate professor of art, and the Facilities Department for helping the students make their vision come true.
Here is the BSU’s statement:
“The #BLM mural project is to highlight the injustices that Black/African people face in the United States. Additionally, the unjust killings of unarmed Black people by police. This painting is not a political statement but a humane one. Black lives do not only matter when killed by police or racist individuals but always. Police brutality, systemic racism, and injustices inflicted on Black people has to end. No one, regardless of any race, creed, sexuality, gender, or culture, should be targeted or killed this way. This mural is not to say that Black people are more important than anyone else but it is a reminder that we are just as important as everyone else. We are tired of the racist killings of our people. This mural is an opportunity to showcase love, peace and appreciation of Black people at ӣƵ of California.” – ӣƵ of California Black Student Union (@duc.bsu).
